5. Leaders of 1857
1. Azimulla khan :
Nana Saheb's agent, He went to England to plead for Nana's pension case. On his return journey he visited France and Crimea. Played a prominent role in organizing the 1857 revolt at Kanpur.
2. Bahadur Shah Zafar :
Last Mughal emperor of India. During the 1857 revolt, the sepoys gathered under his name He was deported by the British to Rangoon after quelling the revolt.
3. Bakht Khan :
He led the sepoy revolt in Bareily. After reaching Delhi, he took the leadership of revolt in his hands also organized the sepoy court and gathered local support for the sepoys.
4. Begum Hazrat Mahal :
Wife of deposed ruler of Lucknow. She actively took part in the revolt against the Doctrine of of Lapse under which Dalhousie wanted her to surrender Lucknow. She gave a stiff resistance after the fall of Lucknow and escaped to Kathmandu.
5. Kunwar Singh :
Kunwar Singh was the deposed Zamindar of Arrah. He gave a very stiff challenge to Britishers defeating them in many hard faught battles.
6. Mangal Pandey :
He was the first martyr of 1857 revolt. A sepoy of the 34th infantry stationed at Barrackpore he revolted against the greased catridge.
7. Nana Saheb :
The adopted son of Peshwa Baji Rao II. who resented the gradual loss of his stature. He revolted with the purpose of regaining lost Maratha glory, played a prominent role in organizing the revolt of1857.
8. Rani Laxmi Bai :
Wife of Gangadhar Rao, the ruler of Jhansi. Under 'Doctrine of Lapse' she was pensioned off. She refused to surrender Jhansi and faught bravely attired as a male. She died fighting at Gwalior.
9. Tantiya Tope :
Ramachandra Panduranga was his real name. he was a master of guerilla tactics. Assisted Nana Sahib & Rani Jhansi against Sir Hugh Rose. Even when all important leaders of the revolt withdrew or were killed he continued his challenge.
10. Veer Surendra Sai :
Due to Surendra Sai's effort, the revolt of 1857 continued till 1862 in Sambalpur district of Orissa. He rose in rebellion against British much before there was any sign of mutiny of 1857.
