Bharat Ratan Awardee
Bharat Ratna is India's highest civilian award which is awarded for the highest degrees of national service. This service takes account of artistic, literary, and scientific achievements, and recognition of public service of the highest order. The award was established by the first President of India, Rajendra Prasad, on 2 January 1954. The awarding of the Bharat Ratna was suspended from 13 July 1977 to 26 January 1980. 

1. Chakravarti Rajagopalachari (1878 - 1972) : 

He popularlly called Rajaji or C.R., was an Indian lawyer, independence activist, politician, writer and statesman. Rajagopalachari was the last Governor-General of India. Chief Minister of Madras state. He founded the Swatantra Party. During his lifetime, he also acquired the nickname 'Mango of Salem'. He proposed what later came to be known as the C. R. Formula. He pioneered temperance and temple entry movements in India and advocated dalit upliftment. 

2. Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (1888-1970) : 

C.V.Raman was born at Thiruvanaikaval, near Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for the year 1930. He found that diffused light contained rays of other wavelengths-what is now popularly known as 'Raman Effect' which explains why the frequency of light passing through a transparent medium changes. He headed an institute that is today named after him 'The Raman Research Institute' Bangalore. 

3. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1888-1975) :

He was an Indian philosopher, educationist and statesman who was the first Vice President of India and the second President of India from 1962 to 1967.He was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1954, appointed a Knight Bachelor in 1931, elected Fellow of the British Academy in 1938, awarded Order of Merit in 1963, received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 1961 and awarded the Templeton Prize in 1975. 

4. Bhagwan Das (169-1958) : 

He was an Indian theosophist and public figure. For a time he served in the Central Legislative Assembly of British India. He became allied with the Hindustani Culture Society and was active in opposing rioting as a form of protest. He was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1955. 

5. Jawaharlal Nehru (1889 - 1964) : 

He was the first Prime Minister of India. Nehru is considered to be the architect of the modern Indian nation-state; a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. As Congress President, Nehru called for complete independence from Britain, and initiated a decisive shift towards the left in Indian politics. The Constitution of India was enacted in 1950, after which he embarked on an ambitious program of economic, social and political reforms. In foreign policy, Nehru took a leading role in Non-Alignment while projecting India as a regional hegemony in South Asia. 

6. Mokshagundam Vivesvaraya (1860-1962) : 

He was a notable Indian engineer, scholar, statesman and the Diwan of Mysore during 1912 to 1918. He was awarded, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955. Every year, 15 September is celebrated as Engineer's Day in India in his memory. He was the chief engineer responsible for the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara dam in Mysore. 

7. Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant (1889-1961) : 

Independence activist, First Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh of independent India. He prepared Pant Report on reforming agrar- ian setup in U.P. He was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1957. 

8. Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve ( 1858 -1962) : 

Hepopularly known as Maharishi Karve, was a social reformer in India in the field of women's welfare. Inspired by Mahatma Phule's movement, Mr Karve decided to continue the work of promoting women's education in India. The Government of India awarded Dhondo Keshav Karve its highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, in 1958, the year he turned 100 years old. 

9. Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy (1882-1962) : 

A close associate of C.R. Das he was elected to Bengal legislative assembly by defeating veteran Surendranath Banerjee later he became, Chief Minister of West Bengal. 

10. Shri Purushottam Das Tandon (1882 - 1962) : 

He was a freedom fighter from Uttar Pradesh in India. He is widely remembered for his efforts in achieving the Official Language of India status for Hindi. He was customarily given the title Rajarshi. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in 1961 

11. Rajendra Prasad (1884 - 1963) : 

He was an Indian politician who became the first President of India. Prasad is the only president to have been elected twice for the office. He is also known as Gandhi of Bihar. Before serving as the president of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the constitution, he had served as Minister of Food and Agriculture in the year 1946 in the Interim national Government. 

12. Dr. Pandurang Vaman Kane (1880-1972) : 

He was a notable Indologist and Sanskrit scholar. He received India's highest civilian award Bharat Ratna in 1963. Eminent Historian Professor R.S. Sharma writes of him in the following words: "Pandurang Vaman Kane, a great Sanskritist wedded to social reform, continued the earlier tradition of scholarship. His monumental work entitled the "History of the Dharmasastra" published in five volumes in the twentieth century. 

13. Dr. Zakir Hussain (1897-1969) : 

He was the third President of India and awarded Bharat Ratana in 1963. He was renewed scholar contributed in establishment of Jamaia Milia Islamia and Warda Education System. He participated in Non-cooperation and Khilafat movement. 

14. Lal Bahadur Shastri (1904- 1966) : 

He was the second Prime Minister of India and a leader of the Indian National Congress party. He joined the Indian independence movement in the 1920s. He was chosen as Nehru's successor owing to his adherence of Nehruvian socialism and continued Nehru's policies of non-alignment He became a national hero following the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965. His slogan of "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan" became very popular during the war. He was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1966. 

15. Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi (1917 - 1984) : 

She was the third Prime Minister of India and a central figure of the Indian National Congress party. Gandhi, who served from 1966 to 1977 and then again from 1980. As Prime Minister, Gandhi became known for her political ruthlessness and unprecedented centralization of power. Gandhi also presided over a state of emergency from 1975 to 1977 during which she ruled by decree and made lasting changes to the constitution of India. She was assassinated in the aftermath of Operation Blue Star. 

16. Varahagiri Venkata Giri (1894 - 1980) : 

He was commonly known as V. V. Giri, was the fourth President of India. He served as Acting President of India from 3 May 1969 to 20 July 1969, before getting elected. He  received India's highest civilian decoration, the Bharat Ratna; in 1975. He was involved in the labour movement and acted as president of the All- India Railway men's Federation and twice serving as president of the All-India Trade Union Congress He has written books on 'Industrial Relations' and 'Labour problems in Indian Industry'. He also served as governor of Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Mysore. 

17. Kumarasami Kamaraj ( 1903-1975) : 

He was an Indian politician from Tamilnadu widely acknowledged as the "Kingmaker" in Indian politics during the 1960s. He was the chief minister of Tamil Nadu during 1954-1963 and a Member of Parliament during 1952-1954 and 1969-1975. He was involved in the Indian independence movement. He was awarded India's highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, in 1976. 

18. Mother Teresa (1910-1997) : 

Mother Teresa's real name was Agnes Gonxhe Bojaxiu was born in Skopje, then a city in Ottoman Empire. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 1979 in recognition of her work in bringing help to suffering humanity. She was a Roman Catholic nun of Albanian origin and Indian citizen. She wanted to become a nun and joined the Irish order of the Sisters of Loretto (at Dublin) in 1928. She came to Calcutta as a nun in 1929. She founded the international order of "The Missionaries of Charity", whose primary task was to love and care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after. 

19. Shri Acharya Vinoba Bhave(1895-1982) : 

He joined Sabarmati Ashram and became one of the closest associates of Gandhiji. He was selected by Gandhiji to be the first satayagrahi for the individual cilvil disobedience movement.After independence he started Bhoodan Momement and also led Savodaya Movement. He translated Gita in Marathi. He was awarded Bharat Ratana in 1983. 

20. Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan (1890 -1988) : 

He also known as Fakhr-e Afghan , Bacha Khan, Badshah Khan and was a Pashtun political and spiritual leader known for his non-violent opposition to the British Raj in British India. He has been called the "Frontier Gandhi" by the Indians. In November 1929, he founded the Khudai Khidmatgar ("Servants of God") movement. In 1987, he became the first non- Indian to be awarded Bharat Ratna.
