8. Economist and Scientists
1. Bidhan Chandra Roy (1882-1962) :
Renowned physicist of Calcutta, enthusiastic supporter of Swaraj Party, made history by defeating the veteran moderate leader Surendra Nath Banerjee in the Bengal Assembly election of 1923. He was the first Chief Minister of West Bengal.
2. C. Vikram Sarabhai (1919-1971) :
The Father of India's space programme, developed India's rocket and space technology and gave a fillup to the atomic energy programme for capacity building from uranium to the building of atomic power stations.
3. C.V. Raman :
Known for his discovery on the scattering of light (Raman Effect) was awarded Noble Prize in 1930. Founder editor of Indian Journal of Physics and founded the Indian Academy of Sciences.
4. Jagadish Chandra Bose :
Eminent Physicist who showed how animal and vegetable tissue responds to electrical excitation, was President of Indian Science Congress in 1927.
5. M. Visvesvaraya :
Served the Nizam of Hyderabad, later became the Diwan of Mysore and established Mysore University in 1916. Was an expert in civil and irrigation engineering and encouraged private industries.
6. P. C. Ray :
Famous for his study on Chemistry. founded "Bengal Chemical and Pharmaceutical Work" during swadeshi movement. He said, "science could afford to wait but not Swaraj".
7. Romesh Chandra Dutt (1848-1909) :
Noted economist, among the first Indians to clear ICS examination (1869). After retirement joined INC, conducted a pioneering research in the field of economy. His famous work includes "The Economic History of India" and "India is the Victorian Age".
8. Raja Ramanna :
Architect of India's first peaceful nuclear explosion at Pokhran in 1974, instrumental in building Apsara. India's first atomic reactor. He devoted himself to building an applied scientific base in India, rather than pure research abroad.
9. Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887-1920) :
One of the greatest mathematician of his times contributed chiefly to theory of numbers. His work 'Last Notebook' contains important mathematical theories which are stated to be of immense value in our advanced computer age.
10. S.S. Bhatnagar (1894-1955) :
A renowned chemist who made significant contribution in the field of physical chemistry, particularly in magneto- chemical studies. The Shanti Swarup Bhatanagr award has been instituted in his honour.
11. S. N. Bose (1894-1974) :
Satyendra Nath Bose developed the new type of quantum statistics known as the Bose - Einstein Statistics. His derivation of plank's equation was appreciated by Einstein and he translated this work into German.
12. Satish Dhawan (1920-2002) :
Shaped India's space programme, contributed to the building and launching of Indian satellites and did pioneering work in the field of Aeronautical Engineering in connec-tion with supersonic flight.
13. Upendra Nath Brahmachari ( 1875-1946) :
He undertook several research activities and discovered 'Urea Stibamini' a urea antimony, for the treatment of Kala-azar, was President of Royal Asiatic Society of Bengal twice.
14. V.O. Chidambaram Pillai :
Promoted Swadeshi in Madras and participated in Swadeshi movement. Founded a textile mill and a cooperative society at Tuticorin started 'Swadeshi steam Navigation Company'.
15. Walachand Hirachand :
Leader of industrial development, helped in launching the Scindia Steam Navigation Company (1919). Associated with Premier Automobiles Ravalgrah Sugar farm Ltd. Became the President of FICCI in 1932.
