3. Women in Freedom Movement

1. Annie Besant (1847-1933) : 

Social reformer and head of Theosophical society in India, worked for women's right and equality of dalits set up Home Rule League in September 1915. Started two magaz-ines New India and Commonweal to spread her ideas 

2. Aruna Asif Ali : 

A radical nationalist she was a member of Congress Socialist Party. During Quit India Movement she went underground and became a fiery heroine. She was the first mayor of Delhi. 

3. Begum Safia Abdul Wajid : 

She got involved with Congress work and had to lose her Lecturer's job during Quit India Movement. After Independence she continued to work for emancipation of masses and was elected to UP Assembly twice. 

4. Durgabai Deshmukh (1909-1981) : 

Known as Iron lady she was a dedicated soical worker and a freedom fighter. She became a member of Constituent Assembly, in social sphere, she founded Andhra Mahila Sabha in 1941 and edited 'Andhra Mahila'. 

5. Jyotirmoyee Ganguli (1889-1945) : 

She joined government service at an early age but resigned during Civil Disobedience Movement. During INA Trials she joined an agitation by forward bloc against imprisonment of soldiers. During it she was mortally wounded. 

6. Kadambini Ganguly : 

She was the first woman graduate of Calcutta University. She attended and addressed the Congress session and became the first woman to do so. 

7. Kasturba Gandhi : 

Wife and lifelong companion of Mahatma Gandhi. She was called 'Ba' endearingly. She was arrested for participating in Quit India Movement. She died while serving imprisonment at Poona. 

8. Kalpana Dutta (1913-1978) : 

Influenced by the revolutionary idea of Surya Sen she joined Chittagong Revolutionary Army and participated in Chittagong armoury raids. Later, joined Communist Party of India. 

9. Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya (1903-1988) : 

Paticipated in the Salt Satyagraha, pioneered the emancipation of Indian womanhood, she was the link for many years between that generation represented by women leaders like Annie Besant and Madam Cama and the present generation. 

10. Kamla Nehru : 

Wife of Jawaharlal Nehru, earned for herself the title "Pride of Allahabad", joined Civil Disobedience Movement. 

11. Pratilata Wadekar (1911-1932) : 

Disciple of Surya Sen, with her comrades she attacked the Paharthali European Club of Chittagong on Sept. 24, 1932. Consumed Potassium Cyanide before confinement in 1932. 

12. Matangini Hajra : 

Born in a peasant family she participated in Dandi March to defy salt laws, thereafter became an ardent nationalist. During Quit India Movement she became a part of Tamluk parallel national government. She died from a police bullet while raiding a police station during Quit India Movement. 

13. Dr. Muthulaxmi Reddy : 

Fought against the corrupting practices in the devadasi system. It was through her efforts that in 1925 the IPC provisions regarding the trafficking in minor girls was extended to devadasis. 

14. Madeleine Slade (Mira Ben) 1892-1982 :  

Influenced by Gandhian philosophy she joined the Sabarmati Ashram. The name Miraben was given to her by Gandhiji. She accompanied Gandhiji to Round Table Conference. Was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 1981. 

15. Nanibala Devi (1888-1967) : 

First and only woman to be tortured by the police under regulation III of 1818. Actively associated with Jugantor Party. She was arrested in Peshawar and deported to Calcutta Jail becoming its first women prisoner. 

16. Nalini Sen Gupta (1886-1973) : 

A British woman married to J.H. Sengupta. She was an extremist Congress leader. She was elected to the Presidentship of Congress in 1933. She also became the Alderman of Calcutta Co-operation. 

17. Sister Nivedita (1867-1911) : 

First western lady to be admitted into Indian monastic order, Margaret Elizabeth Novel renamed as Nivedita by Swami Vivekananda, worked for the downtrodden in India and created consciousness about India in the west through her writings and lectures. 

18. Rehana Tyabjee (1900-1975) : 

Rehana Joined Sabarmati Ashram and worked actively with Gandhiji. She opposed the British policy of divide and rule. She was the first Muslim woman to sing Vande Matram at Congress session. 

19. Rani Gaidiliu (1915-1981) :  

After the execution of Jadonang she took over the movement of naga nationalist, her movement was active during Civil Disobedience Movement. She received praise from nationalist leader. She was arrested in 1932 and released in 1947. Nehru gave her the epithet 'Rani'. 

20. Rajkumari Amrit Kaur (1889-1964) : 

A member of Kapurthala ruling family, participated in the satyagraha of 1930 and Quit India Movement of 1942, founder member of All India Women's Conference and founder of Indian Council of Child Welfare. She was the first health minister of independent India. 

21. Sarla Devi Choudharani : 

She was a social reformer who took up woman's cause. Founded Bharat Stri Mandal in 1910 at Allahabad. It was the first public association for women. 

22. Sucheta Kriplani : 

A socialist and close associate of Jai Prakash Narain, closely participated in Quit India Movement. 

23. Sarla Devi Sarabhai : 

A freedom fighter and the wife of great nationalist Ambalal Sarabhai. She controlled and managed the 'Kasturba Memorial Trust'. 

24. Sarojini Naidu (1879-1949) : 

A writer of passionate verses on a variety of themes, popularly known as "The Nightingale of India", participated in all the programmes of Gandhiji including Dandi March. She was the first Governor of U.P. 

25. Subhadra Kumari Chauhan (1904-1948) : 

Became famous through her soul-stirring ballad "Jhansi Ki Rani". A born poet, short story writer and social reformer, she wrote patriotic poems to arouse the masses during the freedom struggle. 

26. Usha Mehta : 

She was a nationalist leader from Bombay. She operated the underground Congress radio during Quit India movement. 

27. Vijay Laxmi Pandit : 

A Cabinet Minister in 1937 ministry she also participated in quit India movement. Appointed as India's representative at U.N. in 1946. She was also ambassador to many countries in post independent India.
