Eminent Personalities in India
1. Leaders of National Movements
81. Syed Hasan Imam :
A nationalist who was involved with the Congress and was its President in 1918. He joined the Rowlatt Satyagraha.
82. S.A. Dange :
One of the earliest communist leaders. He published a book titled 'Gandhi V/s Lenin' in 1921 in which he showed his preference for socialism. In 1922 started editing 'The Socialist'.
83. Singaravelu Chettiar :
He was President of the Kanpur Communist Conference and Labour Kisan Party. In Gaya session of INC he moved the resolution for national independence and criticized Gandhi's suspension of Non Cooperation Movement.
84. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee :
Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University at the age of 33, propounded educational reform, joined Hindu Mahasabha and later founded Bharatiya Jan Sangh.
85. Sajjad Zahir :
An activist of Communist Party of India who joined the Congress Socialist Party along with Namboodripada after CPI was banned in 1934.
86. Senapati Bapat :
Due to his revolutionary role in freedom struggle, Pandurang Mahadev Bapat was known as 'Senapati Bapat'. He was an active participant in politics and led the Mulshi Satyagraha in 1921.
87. Dr. Sheikh Mohammad :
Worked for Hindu-Muslim Unity. Although he opted for Pakistan in 1947, he declined an offer from Jinnah to join the League Ministry since he was upset with the communal division of the country.
88. Sufi Amba Prasad (1858-1915) :
A leading light of the Bharat Mata Society and the revolutionary movement in Punjab, he earned the title of 'Sufi' when he went to Iran in 1908 to develop a common cause with the Iranian revolutionaries.
89. Subramania Bharati (1881-1921) :
Tamil lyric poet par excellence was also a patriot and a freedom fighter, closely associated with the extremist movement in the Congress. He gave spiritual dimensions to the freedom struggle through his poems.
90. Titu Mir :
Peasant leader who resisted the oppression of the local zamindars and European indigo planters with the ultimate object of liberating the country from British domination.
91. Tej Bahadur Sapru (1875-1949) :
Leader of moderate section of Congress, represented in the first Round Table Conference as member of National Liberal Party and was instrumental in enabling Gandhi to attend second Round Table Conference. In 1934, he was elected to the membership of the Privy Council of London.
92. Vinayak Narahari Bhave (Acharya Vinoba) (1895-1982) :
He joined Sabarmati Ashram and became one of the closest associates of Gandhiji. He was selected by Gandhiji in 1940 to be the first Saytagrahi for the individual Civil Disobedience Movement. After independence started Bhoodan movement and also led Sarvodaya movement. He wrote 'Gitai' in Marathi and 'Boodan Yojna' in Hindi.
93. Vallabhbhai Patel (1885-1950) :
Participated in Bardoli Satyagraha for which he was given the title of 'Sardar' by Gandhi. Known also as the 'Iron man of India' became the 1st Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Independent India. Played Major role in integration of Princely states.
94. Vithalbhai Patel (1871-1933) :
Became the President of Bombay Municipal Corporation in 1924. Also elected the first Indian President of Central Legislative Assembly in 1925, later he relinquished this office and joined Civil Disobedience Movement. He died in Geneva.
95. William Wedderburn (1838-1918) :
An ICS officer, a close associate of A.O Hume, he wrote Hume's biography. He presided over the 5th session of Congress in 1889. He advocated constitutional reform and responsible government in India.
96. Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee (1844- 1906) :
Moderate in his political views. Played an important role in the formation of INC and was its first President. He has the distinction of being the 1st Indian to contest election to British House of Commons.
97. Yusuf Meherally :
A co-founder of the Bombay Provincial Youth League (1934). He was the founder member and became General Secretary of Congress Socialist Party. He fought for the rights of clerical employee in the commercial firms of Bombay by organizing them into Gumastha Mandal.
98. Dr. Zakir Hussain (1897-1969) :
Noted educationist who helped in establishing Jamia Millia Islamia and Wardha Education System. Parti-cipated in non-cooperation and Khilafat Movement. He was the third President of India.
