6. Social Reformers
21. Keshab Chandra Sen (1838-1884) :
A social and religious reformer, was convinced religion must be the basis of all social transformation. Joined Brahmo Samaj and propogated it through out India. Later he established Nava Vidhan Brahmo Samaj.
22. Kandukuri Viresalingam (1848-1919) :
Condemned child marriage and encouraged widow remarriage, established institutions and homes for rehabilitation of widows and orphans, formed 'Hitakarini Turst' to fulfil his social objectives.
23. M.G. Ranade (1842-1901) :
Social and political reformer, supported the 'Bhakti movement' (Bhagwat Dharma) which gave all castes equal status in society, advocated moderate methods and not outright rebellion to effect the transformation of society.
24. M. Venkata Krishnaiah :
An eminent educationist, established schools in Mysore. He spoke against Newspaper Regulation Act, advocated Hindu-Muslim Unity. He is popularly, known as 'Grand Old Man of Mysore 'Tatayya'.
25. Mahatma Hansraj :
An Arya Samajist from Punjab, developed DAV school into a famous college, established an ayurvedic college on modern lines, launched an anti-untouchability movement in Punjab and opened orphanages and homes for widows.
26. Master Tara Singh :
A sikh leader, joined Gurudwara reform movement in 1921. As the President of SGPC he asked for a separate Sikh State, propogated his ideas in 'Sant Sepahi' a monthly Punjabi Magzine.
27. Muhammad Qasim Nanotawi :
Founded Deoband School at Saharanpur in 1867, propogated 'Jami-at-ul ulema- i-Hind' Belived that it is necessary to resuscitate classical Islam.
28. Maulana Shibli Numani :
A muslim social reformer and educationist, he belived in the renovation of Muslim education system. He founded Nadwah-ul-Ulama at Lucknow.
29. Naryan Guru :
Scholar of Sanskrit,Tamil and Malyalam, founded Sri Narayan Dharma Pratipalan Yogam in 1903 for the social, economic, educational and cultural progress of depressed class. He advocated inter-caste marriage and worked for classless society.
30. Pandita Ramabai (1858-1922) :
Criticised Hindu religious practices started the Arya Mahila Samaj in Poona to provide education for women and discourage child marriage. Later, she became a christian and started Sarda Sadan in 1889.
31. R.G. Bhandarkar :
A great orientalist, took interest in the religious and social movement. Founded the Prathna Samaj and tried to ameliorate the position of women.
32. Ramakrishna Parmahansa (1836-1886) :
After realizing oneness with the absolute, became a saint. He recognised oneness and formless-ness of God, worked to spread the universal message of Vedanta.
33. Rama Tirtha (1873-1906) :
Influenced by the teaching of Swami Vivekananda and Sankaracharya of Dwarakapeeth, he became an ascetic and started preaching the philosophy of Vedanta. He aimed at establishing a vedantic society.
34. Rao Bahadur Sabapathy Mudeliar :
Moral force behind 'Sarmarga Samaj' movement which aimed at social equality for all and spiritual and intellectual upliftment of the needy. He set up schools and hospitals for poor people.
35. Raman Maharishi (1876-1950) :
Original name Venkatraman, realized the absolute through deep contemplation become a saint and came to be known as 'Raman Maharishi', toured all over the country and preached religious philosophy.
36. Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) :
A spirtual leader, philosopher and social reformer whose teaching has been a continuous source of inspiration for people all over the world. Hailed as a 'Prophet of nationalism' his soul inspiring messages on the motherland infused the nationlists of pre- independent India with a burning patriotism.
37. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1888-1975) :
One of the greatest philosopher and educationist of India, authored several books on philosophy, theology, education and other subjects. He was the first Vice President and second President of independent India.
38. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan (1817-1898) :
A great Muslim reformer, favoured western education, scientific and rational attitude for them. Aligarh Muslim University owe its origin to him.
39. Swami Shraddhanand :
Influenced by Swami Dayanand, started working for Arya Samaj. He founded 'Gurukul', participated in Rowlatt Bill agitation and Guru-ka-Bagh satyagraha. He was assassinated by a Muslim fanatic in Delhi.
40. Thakkar Bapa :
Associated himself with the Servants of India Society, the Depressed Class Mission and the widow home in Poona, founded cooperative societies for sweepers and scavengers in Bombay, worked for Harijan welfare and against untouchability.
41. T.K. Mahadevan (1886-1930) :
Disiple of Narayan Guru, associated with the Temple Entry Movement, assisted in 'Vaikom Satyagraha' and participated in various political movements as a member of Indian National Congress.
42. Verrier Elwin :
Englishman who followed Gandhiji and worked for the upliftment of tribals, established a welfare centre and a leprosy home at Mandla (M.P). He advised government. of India on tribal affairs.
